What a school, madrasah, or Islamic boarding school website should contain: what the rules require and what is recommended

By Mohammad Hilmi Bisri, S.Kom.. Published 14 October 2026.

We found no regulation that specifically governs the content of websites of schools, madrasahs (Islamic schools under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Kemenag), or Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren). Their content follows the rules on information disclosure, new pupil admission, school operating funds, and personal data protection. Information Commission Regulation (Peraturan Komisi Informasi, Perki) No. 1 of 2021 on Public Information Service Standards allows a choice of channels for announcements: notice boards, an official website, social media, or an app (Article 24(3)).

Rules in force as of 14 October 2026

What must be announced, and when

Public bodies announce regular information at least once every six months (Article 18 of Perki 1/2021), in language that is easy to understand (Article 24(2)). Information about disasters is announced immediately (Article 19).

Data on pupils and santri

Displaying and announcing data on a website counts as processing personal data (Article 16(1)(e) of UU PDP). Children's data is specific personal data (Article 4(2)(e)). Processing it requires the consent of a parent or guardian (Article 25(2)) and must be limited to its purpose (Articles 27 and 28). PP 33/2026 defines a child as a person under 18 years of age who is not married (Article 1 point 21).

UU KIP also exempts evaluations of a person's abilities and personal records relating to the activities of an educational institution (Article 17(h), points 4 and 5). That information may only be disclosed with the written consent of the person concerned (Article 18(2)(a)). Before uploading:

Other duties are covered in the article UU PDP for villages, schools, and agencies.

Who manages it

Steps to get a domain and build the website

  1. Decide on the source of funds. Spending from BOSP funds follows the rules on procurement by educational institutions (Article 53(1) of Permendikdasmen 8/2026), which are discussed in the article buying software through e-Katalog. BOSP funds may not be used to rent an online app for new pupil admission (Article 66(1)(e)).
  2. Choose the domain: .sch.id (the .id domain for schools) for schools and madrasahs, .ponpes.id for pesantren. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Regulation (Permenkomdigi) 5/2025 only governs government agency domains, namely .go.id and .desa.id (Article 32), and does not mention these two domains.
  3. Prepare the documents listed in the PANDI requirements (external site). PANDI is the registry that manages .id domains. For .sch.id: a statement letter from the head teacher or the head of the institution, and an identity card (KTP) or passport. For .ponpes.id: a statement letter from the head of the pesantren or the head of the institution, and a KTP or passport.
  4. Register through a registrar, a domain registration company accredited by PANDI (list of registrars (external site)). PANDI does not list prices on that page, so compare registration and renewal fees at several registrars.
  5. Rent hosting, meaning storage space for the website on a server (a computer that is always connected to the internet). Register the domain and hosting accounts in the institution's name, with its official email address.
  6. Fill in the website following the table, update it at least once every six months, and renew the domain before it expires. How to check for injected online gambling pages is explained in the article hacked website with gambling spam.

Details of HanzCodes services for schools, madrasahs, and Islamic boarding schools are on the solutions for schools and pesantren page.

This summary is not legal advice. For specific decisions, read the text of the regulations and ask the education office (dinas pendidikan), the regency or city office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), or the provincial Information Commission (Komisi Informasi).
